Organizational Development

What is Organizational Development?
  • It is the process of improving an organization’s effectiveness and member’s well-being through the application of behavioural science concept. It focuses on both macro- and micro- levels. HRD plays the role of a change agent.
Characteristic of Organizational Development
  • Participation and involvement in problem solving and decision making by all levels of the organization.
  • Focuses on total system change and views organizations as complex social systems.
  • Client system able to solve its problem on its own-improvement as ongoing process.
  • Action research model with extensive participation by client system members.
  • Betterment of both individual and organization- ‘Win-win’ situation.
Organizational Theories
OD theory can be divided into two categories:
1. Change process theory
  • Change process theory seeks to explain the dynamics though which organizational improvement and change take place.
  • The change process as occurring in three stages-unfreezing, moving and refreezing.
2.   Implementation theory
  • Focuses on specific intervention strategies that are designed to induce changes.
  • There are 4 type of implementation theory that are human process based theory, techno structural theory, sociotechnical systems (STS) theory, organization transformation theory.
